The Elephant Man

on this rocky earth
on this planet
sleeping apart

across it, shadows fall
how far away
leaping hell fires

to save and to guide
or what are friends for

are we our brother's keeper
are we kept or well kept
or left or lost

about the globe roaming

John Merrick on the run
mob behind in hot pursuit

unable to run further
he turns and says

"I am not an animal,
"I am a human being!"
